Comparative survival of breast cancer before and after molecular subtypes

Abstract

Aim: To compare overall survival by stage at 60 months and mortality risk in two groups of patients treated before and after the implementation of molecular subtypes.

Material and Methods: We stu-died a sample of 1146 patients over two periods: Group A (2003-2015) with 545 patients and Group B (2016-2023) with 601 patients. Survival functions by stage were compared between both groups using the Kaplan-Meier method, and risk was analyzed for each group using the Cox model.

Results: 52.48% of Group A and 65.56% of Group B had localized disease. 37.98% of Group A and 25.29% of Group B had regional disease. Stage IV patients represented 9.54% and 9.15%, respectively. The survival function showed significant differences for stage IIIB (p = 0.032). The Cox model did not demonstrate risk differences between the groups (HR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.60-1.14). Stage and hormone sensitivity with unknown HER2 or HER2 (-) were variables of interest regarding risk.

Discussion: Using a uni-variate model, we found no significant differences in overall survival by stage at 60 months between the groups, except for stage IIIB, which showed a reduced risk favoring Group B (HR = 0.55; 95% CI = 0.33-0.93). Analyzed with a proportional hazards model, we were unable to demonstrate significant risk differences between the two groups.

Conclusions: These results did not show significant differences between both groups.
