Abstract

Objective: To report the experience of our center in the last 5 years with the open repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Materials and Method: Observational, retrospective and descriptive study, where all elective open repairs of abdominal aortic aneurysms in the last 5 years were analyzed.

Results: A total of 44 clinical records were reviewed. The average age was 73 ± 3.7 years. 97.2% of the patients had a history of hypertension, 90.9% had a history of smoking. 7 (15,9%) postoperative complications were recorded. Perioperative mortality was 4.5%. The average follow-up was 37.3 ± 13.70 months. An incidence of inci-sional hernia of 9% was recorded.

Discussion: The endovascular approach offers some advantages com-pared to the open one in the short term, however, it has higher long-term mortality. Open repair, although it is a more morbid technique, offers better survival and fewer complications in the long term.

Conclusion: Open repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms is an effective alternative if the patient’s condition allows it.
