Post-defecation hygiene. Is there an optimal technique for doing so?

Abstract

The perianal zone is one of the most contaminated areas of the body, being susceptible to local inflam-matory and infectious processes, as well as transmissible ones. Because of this, it is advisable to main-tain it with periodic toilets, as well as post-defecatory. There are different methods of doing it, which depend on cultural, religious, economic, sexual factors, among many others. Since there is historical documentation, as well as modern post-evacuation cleaning techniques, there is no universal consensus or scientific evidence that guides the best way to do it. This article presents different methodologies trying to be supported by the best existing scientific evidence and by different sociological arguments that support them.
